Last summer Southern Living magazine wrote: “This tiny village [of Saxapahaw] on the Haw River in Alamance County is a unique example of how small-town life can foster community and creativity.” Those of us who call this place home or have close ties to this village love this about Saxapahaw. It is our strong sense of community spirit that draws us together as we envision the future of our beloved village.
Last year this community gathered in May to voice our concerns about traffic in our village (here is the follow up from that meeting). Over the past year, a group of dedicated volunteers have met with one another, community leaders, and county officials, wondering about the steps we can take to maintain the community and creativity woven into our very fabric as we embrace the blessings and challenges of inevitable growth.
This year we will gather on Thursday, May 30 at 5:30 pm at the Hawbridge Upper School to welcome Matthew Hoagland, Alamance County Planning Director, and Jamie Merchel, the Director of Alamance County Parks and Recreation. They will share their wisdom and insight, and then we will have the opportunity to co-create a vision that an engineer could use to build a safe and pedestrian-friendly village.
Your voice matters! As a newly formed non-profit, the purpose of Saxapahaw Forward is to enhance the unique village identity of Saxapahaw and ensure that the big spirit of our rural community thrives for generations to come. To this end, your input and your ideas are essential as we write grants and raise funds.
We hope to see you on Thursday, May 30 at 5:30 pm. If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to offer financial support, please give your tax-deductible donation through Paypal or through Venmo using @saxapahawforward.
Sincerely,
The Saxapahaw Forward Board
