When Tropical Storm Chantal tore through Saxapahaw, it left behind wreckage we can still see and feel. Nearly every one of our ten miles of scenic trails was destroyed.
The damage to our parks is more than just environmental. It’s economic.
Our trails and natural spaces are what draw people to Saxapahaw. They are what keep our music events lively and our small businesses thriving. When the trails close, visitors stop coming—and when that happens, every single business feels it. Even the ones that weren’t directly flooded are now struggling. The cumulative loss of revenue in just a month is well into the millions.
We can’t wait for recovery to happen to us. We have to be part of it.
Join Us for a Trail Work Day
Hosted by: Alamance Parks & Friends of Mountains to a Sea Trail & Saxapahaw Forward
Where: We will be working at the Island Park & the Saxapahaw Trails
When: Saturday, August 9, starting at 8:00 AM
Meet at the B. Everett Jordan Ball Field (5827 Church Rd, Graham, NC 27253).
We need all hands—and hearts—on deck. Whether you can give a full morning or just an hour or two, your help matters. Alamance Parks & Rec has been working nonstop, but this is a huge job. And we know this community: when we come together, we can move mountains—or in this case, logs, mud, and washed-out bridges.
Why It Matters
Reopening the trails and Island Park means:
More visitors returning to Saxapahaw
Increased foot traffic to our shops, restaurants, and market
A signal to the region: Saxapahaw is open, vibrant, and worth the trip
A stronger, faster recovery for every local business
Even businesses that weren’t physically damaged are facing devastating losses—together, they’ve already lost millions in revenue.
