Are you ready to dig in and help make the roads in Saxapahaw friendlier and safer for all? If so, join the Saxapahaw Forward Team on Tuesday, June 13th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Culture Mill Lab.
At this meeting we will discuss progress made since our Community Meeting on Thursday, May 18th, and then establish working teams for some or all of the following:
Saxapahaw Bypass: This is a long term initiative that will require significant commitment and has the potential to dramatically change our situation. Carter Jordan has a plan, and folks are needed advocate for us and make it happen.
Crosswalks, Speed Humps and Redesignating our Roads: This initiative is being led by Ginny Boyer and Kathryn Brown who will need support to make it happen.
Radar Speed Signs: This initiative will require research and some funding, and could yield rapid results. Brandon White has agreed to lead this.
Landscaping to Slow Traffic: Megan Jett and Harry Philips have already begun this conversation. It will also beautify our community!
Buckets with Flags at Crosswalks: This is an easy project that can yield immediate results. Want to take it on?
Noise Reduction Measures: Our County Commissioner, Steve Carter, suggested that we might be able to restrict Jake Brakes in town. Advocates need to follow up.
No Trucks on Moore's Chapel Cemetery: The lanes are only 10 feet wide and the recommendation is a minimum of 11 feet for truck safety. Linda Pucci brought this to our attention. Advocates are needed to follow up.
"Slow Down for Sax" Campaign: Would you like to raise funds and awareness with signs, t-shirts, etc? This might be the right team for you!
Other?
Ideally in these working teams we will:
Identify leaders/drivers for the initiative. (These drivers will ensure that progress is being made on the initiative.)
Decide on specific action items & next steps.
Determine next progress check-in point (Tentative timeline? Can the working group make decisions independently or is this a community-wide decision? Can decisions be made through our Saxapahaw Forward substack and/or email, or do we need to gather in person? is this for the working group only?)
We will conclude the meeting by reporting briefly back to the whole group.
Come ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work! Together we can make Saxapahaw safer and friendlier for all!

Good afternoon Mr. White,
Thank you for your email and on-going efforts to reduce crash rates within our region.
Your email is timely in that I am in the process of applying for 2023 Safe Routes and Streets for All (SS4A) federal funding to assist with implementation of our Transportation (Action) Safety Plan (TSP). I made a Call for Projects a few months ago for member jurisdictions within our MPO, including Alamance County, and received only one safety project for consideration. The application deadline is July 10th. Eligible safety projects require a 20% local match that our smaller municipalities find to be a barrier for project submissions.
Regarding your question as to when the MPO will consider expanding our roadway priority list. That will be a decision made by the MPO's Safety Subcommittee. As you are aware, our TSP was adopted last October and since then I've been working with the Safety Subcommittee to implement the plan. You are welcomed to address our Safety Subcommittee Vision Zero Leadership Team at their July 12th meeting, 9:00 am, Impact Alamance, 133 E Davis Street, Burlington or attend the next BGMPO Technical Coordinating Meeting held virtually at 9:00 a.m. via Microsoft Teams on August 15th and/or the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting,August 15th, 5:30 p.m., Burlington City Hall Municipal Conference Room.
I am available to attend your next meeting on July 11th to present an overview of the TSP, our safety planning efforts and next steps of plan implementation.
Most sincerely,
Wannetta Mallette
